Tiong Bahru is the oldest housing estate in Singapore. The name Tiong Bahru actually means ‘new cemetery’ – Tiong means ‘end’ in the Chinese Hokkien dialect, and bahru means ‘new’ in Malay – because it used to be a burial ground. But today, we can find many interesting old shop-houses and flats where nowadays was claimed as a heritage district.
Tiong Bahru is also renowned for its bird-singing aviaries, which has now
been torn down and replaced by the Link Hotel. Bird lovers gather with
their songbirds every morning to catch up with fellow bird lovers over
coffee and tea amid the crisp, melodious chirps of various birds.
Its attempts to revive the bird corner
have yet to become fully successful. I found there is mural which drawn those history. The picture of three man who sit, above them are birds in their cages. They seems like enjoy the chirp of their birds, while hanging out.
